surgical treatment involving the tooth-bearing portions of the
maxilla and mandible, known as the alveolar ridge. These
procedures form the foundation of both the origins and modern
practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Dentoalveolar
procedures include a broad range of treatments such as simple and
surgical tooth extractions, alveoplasty (recontouring of alveolar
bone), removal of tori and exostoses, surgical exposure of
impacted teeth for orthodontic treatment, and extraction of
impacted third molars (wisdom teeth). Collectively, dentoalveolar
surgery accounts for more than 50 percent of oral and
maxillofacial surgical procedures performed worldwide.
